HOGG MINE - June 21, 2008
Troup County, Lagrange, Georgia
We know that a field trip to the Hogg Mine is a rare opportunity to dig for and collect superb
examples of rose quartz, aquamarine beryl and black tourmaline.  It is also an activity that the
entire family can enjoy, as was proven once again this past Saturday when 44 adults and 27
children joined Marcy and I and Don and Marie for a day of collecting.

The Hogg Mine is a very kid friendly mine and quite safe as long as common sense safety
rules are adhered to.  The most important of these practices is that parents should alway keep
their children within line of sight.  This past Saturday saw 27 children on property,
remarkably well behaved and putting the adults to shame with the number and quality of their
finds.  Unfortunately they are consistently too smart for me to talk them into giving me the stuff
they find.  Below you will see a picture of a young girl holding a perfect piece of rose quartz,
one of the best that I have seen come out of the mine.

The weather for the day was typically warm and while not as hot as some previous trips, it
remains important to have plenty of drinking water on hand.  Bring a beach umbrella as well.
You will be glad that you did.

Pictured below you will also see a ring made from a facet grade piece of aquamarine found at
the Hogg Mine.  Finds like this are not common, but the material is there and when you hit you
may hit big.  The mine's owner commissioned this piece from a piece of aquamarine found by
his grandson.

Rodney has been digging at the mine on a regular basis with both a huge trackhoe and his
backhoe.  Fresh material is coming up weekly and there has never been a better time to visit.
