Field trip to the HOGG MINE - April 5, 2008 Troup County, Lagrange, Georgia
|
The weather forecast for the dig at the Hogg Mine held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, predicted rain all
day, with probabilities of 100% for much of the day. The forecast was right. Of the 1.5 inches of rain
the fell on Lagrange that day a large portion of it hit while we were there digging. The remainder had
fallen the night before, so we arrived at the mine to be greeted by a boot sucking expanse of mud.
Despite the prediction and the reality of the weather, 17 adults and 5 children joined Marcy and I for a
day of digging at the Hogg mine. As usual, it turned out to be a great, if soggy, day.
The next trip is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2008 with Bill Mitcham as trip leader. For those
who don't know him, Bill is a great guy and is especially helpful to newcomers. For details and
directions see Rodney's field trip page at www.dixieeuhedrals.com.
Pictures from April 5, 2008:
Arrival at the mine.
Getting to it.
My first find of the day.
Kids, mud and rocks. I wish my eyes were as good as
theirs are.
Mike finds a large fragment.
Found one!
We were glad to see Tommy at the dig.
Mike finds a piece of top cabbing grade.
Debra dug steady all day in the rain to find this piece. The corner of the fragment had large sections of water clear
strong blue facet grade. She will be able to have some nice stones cut from this, if she can bring herself to have it cut.
Some of my finds from the dig.
Marcy found some rocks that looked to be the right type. I hit one with a hammer and these three crystals fell out.
One of the rods was a perfect match to the negative in the larger crystal.
This is the remainder of the rock, containing two more rods.
Looking forward to the next dig,
Robert
